Planning a trip to the Florida Keys is as much a question of where to stay as it is what to do. Hawks Cay Resort, right in the middle of the Keys, can be an answer to both of those questions. With a large property that includes hotel rooms and vacation homes/condos, there’s a broad range of accommodations and lots of activities around the whole property. Hawks Cay Resort is one of the largest in the Florida Keys, so it’s a destination in itself.
Have you stayed here before? We have and had a great time. When it comes to a family trip to the Florida Keys, finding a place that is right for everybody with things to do and enough space can be tricky, so Hawks Cay Resort was awesome for us. Why Stay at Hawks Cay Resort?
I think when it comes to planning a trip to the Florida Keys, knowing the type of activities you want to do is important and also what your travel style is. Staying at the Hawks Cay Resort is definitely for the type of traveler that would like to check in and then chill out. Located on Duck Key between Marathon and Islamorada, you’ll have an easy drive to either activity hub, but you can also book nearly any sort of day trip directly through Hawks Cay Resort as you would be able to get in one of the towns. Basically, staying here is a way you can plan a complete vacation all from a central location, so if that’s your thing, you’ll love it.
Another thing that makes Hawks Cay Resort a good option for families is the dining on property OR the ability to cook at home if you’re in a condo/townhouse unit. Every family travels differently and having the flexibility of different restaurants, from casual cafe to upscale dining AND have the option to eat in for your meals is a great way to serve the needs of each type of traveler.

When it comes to the accommodations options, there is either the hotel part of the Hawks Cay Resort or the townhouse/condo part of the resort. The hotel rooms at Hawks Cay Resort are all located in the central building (around the main pools and lobby), while the villas/townhouses are in small neighborhoods on property. So then, here are the many types of accommodations available at Hawks Cay Resort:

The cost of these room type ALL VARY on the view and access type. For example, you may see a rate for a 2 Queen room for $365/nt and then the water view version is $100/nt more, and then the Lanai room with direct pool access is still another $100/nt more. [rates are reflective of search for mid-week August stay]
Amenities at Hawks Cay Resort
Since not everyone comes to the Keys and just books a ton of tours and excursions, there are always lots of great things to do that are free or included with your stay. At Hawks Cay Resort you’ll find several pools, a saltwater lagoon, a splash pad pool, game room, fitness center, walking paths and so much more. We usually travel with kayaks or SUPs, and here at Hawks Cay there are places to launch from all around Duck Key. It’s a great place to either relax or be as active as you want.
A bonus amenity for a lot of the townhouse units at Hawks Cay Resort are private plunge pools. That’s right, a lot of the condo style units have small private pools on their patios, which are really wonderful if you’re visiting the Florida Keys in summertime. For us, this is a big bonus because we travel with kids and like to stay up later than them. Having a nice outdoor space, including a small pool is such a highlight.
Dining at Hawks Cay Resort
There are six different dining options at Hawks Cay Resort, so if you’re not staying in a unit with a kitchen or if you just don’t want to cook, you can still stay on property for meals. Here are your options:
- Angler and Ale (our favorite)
- Hawks Cay Marketplace – quick grab-n-go food
- Sixty-One Prime – upscale steak and seafood named for the Mile Marker on the Overseas Highway
- Tiki Grill – poolside service for food and drinks
- Coral Grill – in the Coral Cay and Pirate Ship Pool area
- Oasis Cay Leisure & Libations – at the adults only pool
Remember that both Angler and Ale and Sixty-one Prime are open to the public, so if you’re planning on dining here, you should still make reservations. A nice meal can be the icing on the cake of a stay, so don’t miss our because you didn’t plan.
Parking at Hawks Cay Resort
If you’re staying at Hawks Cay Resort, parking is complimentary. You’ll get instructions about where to park when you check in, as depending on the building you’re in there is different parking. There’s also parking over at the clubhouse building where the fitness center and kids pool is, so just be sure you’re parking pass is displayed and you’re good to go. If you want to do valet parking, which is nice if you’re in the hotel portion of Hawks Cay Resort, that is $25 per day.
Ideas for Enjoying the Middle Keys
Whenever I get to talk about my favorite places for history or snorkeling in the Keys, I always try to mention a few places in the Middle Keys that have been wonderful. I love the railroad history and the vintage imagery of the Middle Keys. The old Seven Mile Bridge, Pigeon Key, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park…
And then the snorkeling and swimming in the Middle Keys is wonderful too. When it comes to planning a trip through the Keys, I think setting aside time right here in the Middle is a great way to mix quiet downtime with the fun of Key West and the adventures of Key Largo.
I hope you’ll consider spending staying at Hawks Cay Resort. I see it very much as a vacation destination in itself versus being a home base for exploring the Keys, but we all travel differently, so choose where you stay based on what inspires you. If you have any questions about visiting the Middle Keys or need additional recommendations, please leave a comment or send us a note.
