Staying at the Ocean Pointe Resort Key Largo – Condo Style Quiet Stay

The Ocean Pointe Resort on Key Largo is a quiet condo style getaway located a ways away from the Overseas Highway. Since the Florida Keys are so narrow, often you’re just a block or so off the main thoroughfare, but here you’re a world away. The Ocean Point Resort is a collection of privately owned condos forming a centralized resort system that’s great for longer stays on Key Largo.

Have you been here before? I think the Ocean Pointe Resort offers a very different take on a Florida Keys vacation due to its location and amenities, so read on and consider if it’s right for your trip. If you have any questions about the resort or things to do on key Largo, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more!

Why Stay at the Ocean Pointe Resort

We love Key Largo for its chillness and abundance of natural areas. The island isn’t as developed as others, but still has lots of great restaurants and activities. On Key Largo, we’ve stayed many places, one of the more secluded spots was at the Ocean Pointe Suites resort. Set away from the Overseas Highway, it’s located on the water with gorgeous views. There is a cafe on property at the clubhouse on the marina, and a full bar, perfect for a drink at sunset on the water.

I like visiting Key Largo because it’s got such a different vibe from Key West. Also, a lot of people make time to visit Key Largo from Miami because it’s such an easy day trip or quick overnight down. We’ve found Ocean Pointe to be perfect for either type of trip. We enjoyed the location on Key Largo, the pathways through the mangroves, the small private beach and the picturesque pier with a palapa at the end. It is a nice, quiet getaway destination.

Room Options at the Ocean Pointe Suites Resort

Many of the condo units of the Ocean Pointe Suites are individually owned and then managed by the hotel, so each unit is just a little different. The layouts and basic features are the same, and all have balconies and a water view, but the units may vary a bit inside. You can book a one bedroom or a two bedroom unit. If you’re considering a longer stay, like through the winter months, they offer an extended stay option that gives a discounted rate for the length of stay.

We enjoyed staying in a two bedroom condo unit that slept six:  1 king bedroom w/ bathroom, 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds, and then a pull-out sofa sleeper. There was a full bathroom connected to the main living space, and a washer/dryer stack (every unit has a washer/dryer set). We liked the layout of our resort condo suite because there was plenty of room for our family to spread out, and it was quiet enough to be able to work from during our stay.

Booking tip:  advanced booking (more than 2 weeks out) can usually get you a discounted rate, and while you cannot request a specific condo unit number, booking in advance will give you a better chance of securing the room layout you prefer.

Ocean Pointe Resort Amenities

Think of staying at the Ocean Pointe Suites as renting a condo vs checking into a hotel. You can expect the same amenities here as you would have renting a condo or vacation rental. You’ve got your full kitchen, plenty of living space, in-unit laundry and all the stuff you need to actually live here and enjoy downtime on property. I love when we get to travel this way and actually just chill like we’re at our home away from home.

Beyond the units, there are two tennis courts that (access is included in your stay), there walking paths, and there’s a beautiful marina. If you’re arriving by boat you will need to alert the property well in advance and rent a slip. They can accommodate up to a 28′ boat, but NO jet skis.

And yes, there is a lovely swimming pool here at the Ocean Pointe Resort. While you might expect beautiful, hot weather year round in the Florida Keys, the winter months can have a crisp chill in the air. While there is a very large, beautiful swimming pool and pool deck area that includes a spa tub, this is closed in the winter months. Most resorts in the Florida Keys will keep their pool areas open through the end of November, and many will keep them open and heated all through the winter, and Ocean Pointe follows the weather pattern for having it open. Just keep this in mind in case you’re visiting in the winter and counting on a pool.

Dining Near the Ocean Pointe Resort

Key Largo is full of wonderful restaurants, and my favorite slice of Key Lime Pie can be found here, so for the nights that you don’t want to cook in your condo unit at the Ocean Pointe Resort you will easily be able to find a nice dinner. There is a small cafe on property, but it has limited hours and a limited menu.

Anywhere you want to dine on Key Largo is within 10-15 minutes from the resort, so branch out and find someplace fun. Here are my top picks for dining near the Ocean Pointe Resort:

  • Skipper’s Dockside
  • Snappers Oceanfront
  • Snook’s Bayside
  • Buzzard’s Roost
  • The Fish House (so kitschy)
  • Mrs. Mack’s I or II – both are great

You’ll be able to pick from many more places, but these spots are really good and we’ve eaten at each one multiple times.

Ocean Pointe Check-in and Parking Information

A unique MUST KNOW about staying at the Ocean Pointe Resort is that you don’t check in on property, but actually at the management office off the Overseas Highway. If you’re arriving late, you’ll be able to check in at the overnight office on property, but from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm you need to check in and get your keys and parking pass here: 92330 Overseas Hwy Suite 107, Tavernier, FL 33070

Parking is included with your stay at the Ocean Pointe Resort, but you do need to get your parking permit when you check in. Access to the property is gated, so the attendant will likely remind you to have your permit displayed when you return to your unit. There is plenty of parking at each of the condo buildings, so don’t stress about getting a great spot, as they’re all good. Valet parking is not available as it’s very much a self-service condo resort (no housekeeping either).

More Things to Do on Key Largo

I really enjoy spending time on Key Largo as there are great activities and lots of good restaurants. Being the first of the towns in the Florida Keys, this is the easiest key for people in Miami and South Florida to get to, so it’s a popular weekend destination. Every day of the week is great though, and it maintains its chill mode most of the time. Key Largo is a good place to launch into wildlife tours with several snorkeling and dive outfitters being based here.

Also, there are a few state parks on Key Largo, but the highlight really is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. From trails to kayaking to glass bottom boats and snorkel trips, this is the one-stop-shop for an awesome Key Largo experience.

Where to Stay on Key Largo

Key Largo is the largest of the Florida Keys and has boutique hotels, roadside motels, B&Bs and resorts. We’ve enjoyed staying in condo style resorts and well as luxe spots on Key Largo. Heck, the Holiday Inn Key Largo is actually our most frequented hotel in the Keys.

Check out the map below for ideas for where to stay when you come to this wonderful island.

I hope you’ll consider spending a few nights here at the Ocean Pointe Resort. The vibe here is mellow and is perfectly Florida Keys despite being just at the start of the islands. If you have any questions about visiting Key Largo or need additional recommendations, please leave a comment or send us a note.
