For all the times I’ve driven past Pigeon Key I had never wondered much about it… and then I went and I loved it. Historic Pigeon Key is connected to Marathon by the original Seven Mile Bridge, a part of the first train track system through the Florida Keys. This Key itself was integral to the building of the railroad AND the Overseas Highway.
Doing the Pigeon Key tour is a great way to both learn about the fascinating side of Keys history and enjoy a beautiful, hard to get to island. I think planning a half day at Pigeon Key is a great idea, whether you’re planning for a family or just adults. We had a great time on the island, learned a lot and even had a nice swim. If you have any questions about visiting or spending time in the Middle Keys, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more and help you plan an amazing time in the Florida Keys.
Why Visit Pigeon Key off Marathon
I wasn’t sure what to expect initially when we added Pigeon Key to our Florida Keys road trip itinerary. I had driven past it many times, as it’s a key that’s just off the Overseas Highway connected to the rest of the Keys by part of the original Seven Mile Bridge. I’m all about history, but in passing this unusual Key, it never shouted “Stop here!” at me. Now that I’ve been and learned all about the building of the railway through the Keys, I can say that Pigeon Key is a worthwhile stop both for history buffs and general visitors who are driving through the Keys and wondering about all the ruined bridges and historic homes.
The visit to the historic Key starts with a tour where you’re picked up from the parking area on a tram and then driven across the Old Seven Mile Bridge. You’ll meet your guide who shares all about the history of the homes and camp at Pigeon Key, and then you’ll tour the grounds. I didn’t know I would be fascinated by the stories, but having spent so much time in the Keys and heard so much about Henry Flagler and the railroad, visiting Pigeon Key was the missing part of the big picture. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
Tips for Visiting Pigeon Key
Visiting Pigeon Key is both a history tour and a fun beach trip. Once you’ve completed your guided tour through the buildings and exhibits, you’re welcome to roam the shores of Pigeon Key and even swim. There is a wonderful cove and pier on the north side of the Key with some good snorkeling. While we do love snorkeling tours, having full flexibility and a good place to get to without a boat is great.
Wading birds like this part of the island, so the Florida Keys birdwatching is usually pretty good, and it’s a great spot to enjoy a quiet float. Bring your beach towel and Keens to enjoy a swim. There’s space to lay out and facilities for changing. I say to bring Keens or sturdy sandals because there is a lot of coral to walk across when you get in the water. Once you’re in you’re good, but it’s a rough entry.
Gear for a Pigeon Key Visit
Like I said, bring your beach towel and sturdy sandals for a visit to Pigeon Key. Also bring plenty of water, reef-safe sunblock and your camera. I think spending three hours or so here is ideal because you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy both the tour and have your own time on the island. During that time, you’ll have access to facilities and shade, but if you bring a regular umbrella or a big hat, that’ll help you stay cool if you’re visiting the Florida Keys in summer.
Driving and Parking Instructions for Pigeon Key
Less than a mile west/south of the Marathon Turtle Hospital is where you can meet your tour over to historic Pigeon Key. You’ll park just off the Overseas Highway in the designated parking lot. This is where you’ll get on your tram to head to the historic Key.
“Can I Visit Pigeon Key without a tour?” You can visit the Key on your own by biking or walking on the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Walkers, bikers and runners can access Pigeon Key between 9am-4pm daily. Park just before the bridge in the lot and then you can start your trek on the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Admission will be required to access the island itself, join a tour or use the facilities. The tour is $25 per adult and that includes the tram ride from the parking area.

Ideas for Enjoying the Middle Keys
Whenever I get to talk about my favorite places for history or snorkeling in the Keys, I always try to mention a few places in the Middle Keys that have been wonderful. I love the railroad history and the vintage imagery of the Middle Keys. The old Seven Mile Bridge, Pigeon Key, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park… And then the snorkeling and swimming in the Middle Keys is wonderful too. When it comes to planning a trip through the Keys, I think setting aside time right here in the Middle is a great way to mix quiet downtime with the fun of Key West and the adventures of Key Largo.
I hope you’ll consider spending some time on Pigeon Key. The tour is interesting, the island is mellow and it is all perfectly Keys.
