REEF Ocean Exploration Center on Key Largo – Education and Conservation

Being a firm believer in both education and understanding the environment around us, I think visiting the REEF Ocean Exploration Center on Key Largo is an important part of traveling through the Florida Keys. Fairly new, the REEF Ocean Exploration Center just opened in 2025 as a physical extension of the long-existing Reef Environmental Education Foundation. If you are looking for a way to make your time underwater more fascinating and fun, the REEF Ocean Exploration Center is a must.

We’ve got the scoop on what you’ll find here at REEF and suggestions for snorkeling throughout the Florida Keys. You know, learn a little about fish and then go see them in the wild: perfect! If you have any questions about visiting the REEF Ocean Exploration Center or snorkeling with kids, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more and help you plan a great trip through the Florida Keys.

Why Visit the REEF Ocean Exploration Center?

We spend a lot of time out on the water and exploring the reefs and grassy sandbars, but for all the things we see, there’s not a lot of knowledge that comes with it. Yes, we know that we need to be careful and act in a way that preserves the habitat and wildlife for the future, but so often we didn’t know much about what we’re looking at. Visiting the REEF Ocean Exploration Center is a great way to learn a little about the wildlife you’re seeing and also about the science of reefs and how they’re being protected. Between the exhibits, the staff on site and the community programs, REEF is a great resource and good place to visit on a rainy day.

Yes, I would say that spending some time here at the REEF Ocean Explorations Center is one of the best things to do on Key Largo when the weather is not cooperating, and ideally before you’ve headed out on a snorkel tour or on the glass bottom boat at Pennekamp State Park. There’s something about getting to see into the world of the awesome fish and animals before you’re actually out in the water that helps put the grandeur and specialness into perspective. I think a lot of kids, and adults too actually, just think of all of the different snorkeling tours in the Florida Keys as trips to the zoo or aquarium, but when you come to REEF Ocean Exploration Center you can see that it’s an entire ecosystem functioning without humans, and that WE are the visitors that don’t really belong on the reef.

Learning about the underwater world and seeing examples of different species up close, despite them being fake, is great for prepping your brain for what you’ll encounter when you’re in the wild. Before you come to Key Largo, check the calendar for events being hosted by REEF Ocean Exploration Center. They do educational presentations, community art events, learning labs, fundraisers and even a whole program around lionfish in the Florida Keys. REEF is a multipurpose organization that just happens to also have an interesting location you can visit.

Tips for Visiting the REEF Ocean Exploration Center

Now, I think any opportunity to learn should be taken, but I know that’s not how everyone looks at things, especially when they’re on vacation. So here’s how you make the most of your time and include a visit to the REEF Ocean Exploration Center for exploring and snorkeling around Key Largo and the rest of the Keys:

  • since REEF is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm M-Sa, stop in to get a fish guide
  • go through the exhibits and look at the models up close
  • read about how to be a citizen scientist
  • once you have primed your brain for some underwater time, make your departure and go see what you can see.

You don’t need to set aside hours to make REEF a valuable part of your trip, as it’s really meant for education and inspiration. If you are having a weather day, spend a bit more time at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center. There are some really facinating things to read, and if you go through the electronic exhibits, you’ll both learn something (particularly about the Nassau grouper) and you’ll allow the weather to pass. We’re always trying to keep activities like this in our back pocket for when the wind or rain is preventing us from our original plans.

For a little bit of art when you visit, step out back to REEF’s garden, full of fun sculptures and a little more education about some of the issues facing the reefs off the Florida Keys. They also have shaded picnic spots back here with tables, so if you need an easy lunch stop, the REEF Ocean Exploration Center is perfect for that.

What is REEF?

REEF is actually an acronym for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. It’s a non-profit (tax exempt) and has been working to educate people on ways to save our oceans since 1992. That’s a long time! They’ve reached thousands upon thousands of students and adults through their onsite education sessions, school programs and public information services. They serve the reefs all around the world, from here in the Florida Keys to Mexico and Indonesia.

Parking for the REEF Ocean Exploration Center

The REEF Ocean Exploration Center is in kind of a weird spot as it’s in the middle of the Overseas Highway on Key Largo. You can approach it from the north or south by making a left into the median parking lot in front of the building. There is usually plenty of parking unless there’s a big event going. If you’re stopping here for a picnic in the gardens, they are located on the south side of the REEF building, so you’ll need to walk around from the main parking area.

More Things to Do on Key Largo

I really enjoy spending time on Key Largo as there are great activities and lots of good restaurants. Being the first of the towns in the Florida Keys, this is the easiest key for people in Miami and South Florida to get to, so it’s a popular weekend destination. Every day of the week is great though, and it maintains its chill mode most of the time. Key Largo is a good place to launch into wildlife tours with several snorkeling and dive outfitters being based here.

Also, there are a few state parks on Key Largo, but the highlight really is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. From trails to kayaking to glass bottom boats and snorkel trips, this is the one-stop-shop for an awesome Key Largo experience.

Where to Stay on Key Largo

Key Largo is the largest of the Florida Keys and has boutique hotels, roadside motels, B&Bs and resorts. We’ve enjoyed staying in condo style resorts and well as luxe spots on Key Largo. Heck, the Holiday Inn Key Largo is actually our most frequented hotel in the Keys.

Check out the map below for ideas for where to stay when you come to this wonderful island.
