Easily overlooked on your way to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West is the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center. This free science museum is all about the waters that surround the Keys, from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas. One of the best things to do in Key West with kids on a rainy or really hot day, this is where you come to learn about the coral reefs and what scientists study underwater. The museum is run by NOAA and volunteers, so it’s all science based exhibits with anecdotal elements, making it great for adults as well as kids.

Why Visit the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center

Before anything else, this is a FREE activity, so add it to your list. Beyond that, I’m a big believer that being educated about something or taking the time to learn about the world around you makes it much more enjoyable. And that’s why places like the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center are great. Chances are that when you’re confusing Key West you’ll be going on a snorkeling tour or maybe going out on the Glass Bottom Boat, so wouldn’t it be nice to know a little about the reefs and their wildlife? And if you’re visiting the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum to check out the recovered treasure, wouldn’t it be great to understand why all the ships wrecked? Or if you’re kayaking around Key West, do you know about the mangroves and why they’re so important? All of these are a part of the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center.

If you’re visiting Key West with kids in the summer, it’s good to have a plan that allows for some air conditioned indoor time. The Key West Eco Discovery Center is a great activity to keep in your back pocket for when you need that. It’s free and fascinating, and it’s a great opportunity to cool off. There are films, kids friendly exhibits, and you’ll get a free poster about the reefs. It’s a win win. I think one of the most interesting exhibits at the Florida Keys is actually about coral restoration. There’s lots of information about what’s happened to the coral reefs and you can even see the live coral there growing for restoration work. Each time we visit we learn something new.

Tips for a Visiting the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center

When you visit the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center, you’ll be stepping into an interactive learning museum, so get in the mindset of having fun and learning something about the habitats and ecosystems you’ll be visiting. Our kids have enjoyed stopping in here for years and still do. I think that since the exhibits are geared towards a variety of ages and experience levels with the Keys, there’s kind of always something new to appeal to them. And they also always bring home a fresh marine life poster, either to give to somebody or to replace the old ones in their rooms.

When you’re planning your Florida Keys vacation, it’s easy to add a visit to the Eco Discovery Center when you’re visiting Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. It won’t take longer than 45 minutes unless you get wrapped up in a conversation with a marine biologist or somebody working on the coral project. It’s a fun stop, but it’s not the main activity for the day.

We’ve missed school from time to time for different trips, and when we do that we look for educational stops to add into our itinerary. If you’re in Key West and kids are missing school the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center is a good way to justify a little break because it’s a place for learning unlike what you’ll find in most other vacation destinations. Even if you stopped at the REEF Ocean Exploration Center up on Key Largo, you’ve still got an opportunity to learn new things here in Key West.

Need to Know about NOAA in the Keys

There’s nothing to do in advance of visiting the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center except to confirm that they’re open and see if they have any special events going on. Because it’s run in partnership with NOAA and volunteers, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary sometimes has public education events and fundraisers that happen here. Check the calendar before you visit to see what they have going on.

Something else you might have seen as you’re doing boat tours and such in the Florida Keys are stickers or certificates on boats and in tour offices that say “Blue Star Operator” on them. This is a designation that tour providers earn from NOAA signifying that they demonstrate a commitment to responsible tourism, including educating their guests about the ocean and the ecosystems they’re visiting. We try to always go out with Blue Star Operators and because of the conservation and education piece, each tour into the marine environment means we learn something new.

Getting to the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center

There is ample parking at the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center. It’s located near the park and ball fields, so it may look busy as you approach, but it’s usually pretty chill here. You can walk here from the Historic District. It’s about 15 minutes or so, crossing Duval and Whitehead Streets where you’ll find the Key West Art and History Museum and the Hemingway Home Museum, and then passing the Truman Little Whitehouse complex. If you’re heading to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, the Eco Discovery Center is just before you arrive at the park entry gate.
